The Many Faces of Madeline

Madeline makes the best faces at us. She will have perfected the eye roll by the time she is a teenager. Clay says I make the same faces at him - not sure about that but this girl is a trip! Here she is feeding and burping her baby when I wouldn't let her do the same to Virginia Ann so she was mad at me. Can you say attitude?

P.S. It happened to be 80 degrees here Monday so we went to a friends house who has a blow up water slide. The temp has dropped significantly every day but Madeline still insists on wearing her bathing suit in the house at all times. I am picking my battles with this one.)

Four months

Virginia Ann hit the four month mark while we were in Knoxville. She is growing and becoming much more interactive. She laughs and loves when Madeline and Jack talk to her. She is trying so hard to roll over but it hasn't happened yet. She is a great napper but wakes twice at night. I don't have the heart to let her cry it out yet. She weighs 13.3 and is 24 inches. I just looked back here and here and VA is so much smaller than Jack and Madeline were at this age but she started out almost a pound less than them so I guess it is to be expected. She is 50% in both height and weight and for the first time ever I have a child whose head circumference is actually on the chart :) I loev this little girl so much and love cuddling with her whenever I get the chance. I think I am a pretty chill parent as it is but the third time around, I am enjoying the baby stage so much more. I know it is not forever, that some day I will sleep again but she will never be so sweet, soft and cuddly and as she is now. And for that, amongst many other things, I am grateful!

Over the river and through the woods

I did it. I didn't know if I could but I did. It only took $50 worth of snacks, lollipops, sprite and movies on my iphone but I did it. I drove to Knoxville (7 hours) with the three musketeers all by myself. And it wasn't that bad. The hardest part was getting out of the car- which we only did once each way. But that one stop took a minimum of an hour. Factor in feeding Virginia Ann in the car while Jack and Mad play, taking all three into the tiny bathroom stall, changing Madeline and VA's diapers, washing hands and then actually eating the meal! But it was all worth it to see my family!
The FIVE Connor grandkids- my sister is having #6 on April 18!
Cael, Madeline, Maeve, Virginia Ann and Jack
My Mom's sister- my Aunt Tricia- flew in from NY to see these cuties! She was a hit - took Maeve and Jack to see Tangled, played alot of hide and seek and Shamrock, Shamrock, Leprechaun (Maeve's version of duck, duck, goose)
My beautiful Mom!
Virginia Ann got to meet Aunt Julia for the first time!
And Uncle Ryan!

We got to go to the Donaldson's Annual St Patrick's Day party. Gerry had lots of fun swag for the kids. Madeline loved these glasses!
Jack and the hostess
Lots of corned beef, cabbage and Irish Soda bread to go around!
The kids table- When Jack saw the corned beed he said "I love bacon!" And Madeline and Maeve agreed and they all ate alot of "bacon."
The adult table
We had a great trip and look forward to going back in May for Ryan's law school graduation :)

Happy PIe Day!

Tomorrow is PIe Day- 3.14. We have celebrated this wonderful holiday for the last 6 years- a great excuse to eat pie! Some years we have had big parties and other years small get togethers. This year was a small group b/c I am still not up for entertaining large groups quite yet! But between the four families we had some delicious pies!
My baking assistants in their matching outfits. VA looks a little concerned.
Rightfully so! This picture captures my reality so well!!
Happy PIe Day!

The Invisible Woman

My neighbor, Megan, shared this story on her blog and I had to repost. I know we all feel like this sometimes. Just a reminder that we are doing great work! Keep it up friends!
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm
on the phone?' Obviously not. No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.
I'm invisible.
Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this?
Can you tie this? Can you open this?
Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.' I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again.

She's going... she's going... she's gone!
One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only thing I could find that was clean. My unwashed hair was pulled up in a banana clip and I was afraid I could actually smell peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.'

It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: 'To Charlotte , with
admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'
In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:
No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.
They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.
The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.
A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny
bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'
I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become.'
At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.
When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell thefriend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three
hours and presses all the linens for the table.'
That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself.
I just want him to want to come home.
And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'You're gonna love it there.'
As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're
doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the
world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Bubble skirt

Do you have a piece of clothing that brings back memories? I have decided that now that I have TWO girls, I need to sew. My first project for VAC was a bubble skirt onesie dress. I love bubble skirts, always have ever since my 10th grade prom dress was a purple lace bubble skirt. Yes, I went to prom in 10th grade-I was that cool :) Not really. I actually was dating a guy the same age as me but my two friends were going to prom and they convinced me to dump the boyfriend and go with one of their guy friends. I did. And I got to wear the bubble skirt. Ah the memories! I can't imagine this cutie going to prom. Her Dad told me she isn't allowed to make out with anyone til college. We'll see about that although I think Madeline will be the one to worry about :)

Two years old!

Miss Madeline turned two last week! She was fully aware it was her birthday and loved singing "Happy Birthday" to her herself (and continues to do so). We started the day with presents and birthday pancakes in the morning and then took munchkins to school to celebrate. I have vowed to not do big parties until they are old enough to appreciate them (my opinion so far is age 4) so we were just going to have cupcakes at home but then I got a stomach bug and was down a couple of days. Clay took the kids to Chik-fil-a for dinner and our wonderful friends the Smiths, showed up there with pink cupcakes, balloons and presents for Madeline. She was so excited and we were so thankful for their thoughtfulness!
There are few words to describe Madeline sufficiently. There is so much personality in such a small body. We are constantly amazed at her energy and her vocabulary. I do not remember a time when she did not talk. She is a constant verbal train of thought. You can have full conversations with her. She loves to sing and will sing to you or to no one at all. She sings in the car and in the bathtub. She sings real songs and ones we don't know. Her current favorites are "Child of God" and "Bringing home a baby bumblebee." She says her own prayers at night including thanking God for our whole family, her teacher Marian, her friend Jonah, school and playgrounds. When Madeline wants to do something she knows she should not, she will look at me and say "Go away Mommy." She is so smart and sometimes devious. My dad has nicknamed her "Sam" from Bewitched :)Madeline likes me but she LOVES her daddy. He has almost as much energy as her so they make a good pair. She runs into his arms every night and loves playing tag, chase and hide and seek with Clay. She spends most of her time during the day bugging Jack like a good little sister should and he tolerates her 80% of the time. He invents games for them and leads her in fort building or pillow fights. It warms my heart when they play together. Madeline loves Virginia Ann and feeds, rocks, burps, etc her baby dolls just like I do with VAC. I can't wait to watch their relationship develop. Madeline is such a blessing in our family, pure entertainment every day. Happy Birthday Madgirl!

Cupcakes

Uncle Ryan and Aunt Juju sent Madeline this cupcake set for her birthday. She loves it and will "bake" and say "look, just like momma." I couldn't be prouder!
I love these little feet and I love how she sits with them crossed. She is a girl through and through.

Three Months

Loves her hands
And her feet
Virginia Ann's first three months have flown by! She is still a great baby- calm and chill all the time. She loves to sit in her seat or swing and just watch all the madness around her. She has "woken up" in the last few weeks and smiles and coos alot. She is sleeping in her crib and wakes once to eat which is so wonderful after our first 10 weeks of waking every 2.5 hours. If all babies were like Virginia Ann, people would have 10! She is so easy and such a joy with her chubby cheeks and big smiles she gives us. I cherish the few moments I have alone with her- she is growing way too fast!

Madeline and Jack wanted in on the photo shoot. Crazy that they were all looking at the same time! Crazy that I have THREE children!! We are so blessed!

Valentine's Day

Holidays are so fun when you have little people who are excited about them! We had a great time making Valentine's this year. I saw this idea on a blog and hoped my kids would pose for the pics and couldn't believe it when they actually did!

Madeline was excited to have a party at school and loved coming home to dump her Valentines on the couch and take stock. I love how hard she is concentrating here. This girl is serious about her candy!

My littlest Valentine!

Virginia Ann tried out the Bumbo for the first time. She is starting to like it and is very happy when she can lean over and get her hands in her mouth!
The kids woke up Vday morning to lots of goodies sent by Mimi and Goose and Grandma and Papa. They are so loved!

With my grandmother Madeline's cross
Beautiful gown!
My mom bought the gown and has had every grandchild's initials put in it. VAC is next and then QMS! Our family is so blessed!

The boys also ran the Krispy Kreme Challenge on Saturday morning in the cold rain-it is a 5K where you run half way , eat a dozen donuts and then run back. Jordan was the only one who ate all 12 but Clay is glad to check it off his list. I am just glad no one got sick- at my house :)

The truth

First, I am going to show you the kids cute Valentine's bathroom. I could tell you that every room in our house is decorated this cute. I could also tell you I did all of this in a few hours.

But I would be lying and this post is all about honesty. It took me days to print that file out, send it to Staples, get a frame and then actually get it on the wall. It took even more time to paint the wood pieces, then cut the names from vinyl on my Cricut and then actually get those on the wall. Seriously, people, like weeks. See, I, like many of you, read those blogs where the moms are all crafty and cook great things and always look super cute. I read them and want to be like them. But then I stop and KNOW they are only showing us one side of their lives. I know that alot of you think I am crafty or bake fun things and I do that- some of the time. But here is what I do MOST of the time:

I come into Jack's room to find he has taken everything he owns and put it on the top bunk
I come out of my room after feeding the baby and find that Jack and Madeline have taken everything they both own plus all the cushions in the house and piled them up outside my door
My bookcase looks like this at the end of the day
And most mornings I wake up (at 6am) to Jack having piled more stuff in Madeline's crib to help her climb out.
This is what I do MOST of the time. I clean up, pick up, vacuum up, empty dishwashers full of stuff, load laundry, unload laundry, fold laundry, put it away and start all over. I hold the baby so the toddler doesn't harm her. I build tents and forts and make more messes out of sheets, blankets and pillows. I go up and down the stairs a bazillion times and still can't fit into any of my clothes. I try to feign some sort of normalcy that reminds me of the days when I had control and cute shoes and necklaces without teethmarks and at least 15 minutes in the day to do something I wanted to do but those days are long gone. Everyone keeps telling me to "enjoy this time- it goes so fast." While I realize that, I think it would go faster if I got to sleep any longer than 4 hours at a time in the last three months. I love my kids. They are amazing. I laugh alot but I cry sometimes too because this motherhood thing is hard. Damn hard. And that friends, is the truth.
